Terms of use

Last updated November 5, 2026.

These terms cover the kikitomo website (kikitomo.com) and its browser extension. By creating an account or using them, you agree to these terms and to the privacy policy. If you don’t agree, please don’t use kikitomo.

What kikitomo is

kikitomo is a free tool for studying Japanese. It analyses subtitles to show which words and grammar you know, helps you review them, and shows a dictionary while you watch. It doesn’t host, stream or sell video, and it isn’t affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Crunchyroll, Netflix, YouTube, Jimaku or any show’s rights holders. Their names are used only to say which sites the extension works with.

Your account

  • You need to be at least 13 to use kikitomo.
  • Keep your password and the extension’s sign-in to yourself. You’re responsible for what happens in your account.
  • One person per account. Don’t create accounts automatically or in bulk.

Subtitles and other content

  • Only upload or add files you’re allowed to use, for your own personal study. Subtitles belong to their authors and rights holders, not to kikitomo or to you.
  • Your library is private to your account. Don’t use kikitomo to share or distribute subtitles, frames or audio with other people.
  • So kikitomo can work, you let it store, analyse and show back to you what you add, and keep it until you delete it or your account. It isn’t used for anything else.
  • When the extension finds subtitles on Jimaku or the Kitsunekko mirror, those files come from third parties. kikitomo doesn’t check them and isn’t responsible for them.

Using the streaming sites

The extension runs on top of sites you already use. You need your own account there, and your use of those sites is still covered by their own terms.

Things not to do

  • Don’t try to break into, overload or get around the limits of kikitomo or other people’s accounts.
  • Don’t scrape kikitomo or call its API except through the website and extension.
  • Don’t use kikitomo for anything illegal, including copyright infringement.

We may suspend or delete accounts that break these rules.

Copyright complaints

If you hold the rights to something you believe is in kikitomo without permission, email [email protected] saying what it is and where it appears. We’ll look into it and remove it where appropriate.

Dictionary data and open-source software

The dictionary, pitch accents and word frequencies come from projects that publish them under open licences, which still apply to that data. See the credits.

No guarantees

kikitomo is provided as it is, for free. Readings, meanings, word counts and grammar tags are made automatically and are sometimes wrong. The service may change, be unavailable, or stop, and features may be added or removed. Export your data on the Account page whenever you want a copy.

As far as the law allows, kikitomo and the people who run it aren’t liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data, arising from using it. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have that the law doesn’t let us limit.

Ending

You can stop using kikitomo and delete your account at any time on the Account page. We may end the service, with notice by email where we can.

Changes

If these terms change, the new version goes on this page with a new date. For significant changes we’ll also let you know by email or on the site. Using kikitomo after a change means you accept the new terms.
