kikitomo is a tool for learning Japanese from subtitles: the website at kikitomo.com and its browser extension for Crunchyroll, Netflix and YouTube. This page says what they collect and what happens to it. In short: only what’s needed for kikitomo to work, kept for your account, never sold, and no ads or tracking.

What we collect

Your account

Your email address and a hashed password (never the password itself). The email is used to sign you in, to confirm it’s yours and to reset your password.

Your learning data

The words and grammar points you mark (known, learning and so on), your reviews and their results, your quiz answers’ outcome (which words got marked known), and your settings on the site.

Your library

Subtitle files you upload, or that the extension finds for an episode you watch, with the show and episode they belong to, and kikitomo’s analysis of them (the words and grammar in each line).

From the browser extension

The extension runs only on Crunchyroll, Netflix and YouTube pages. While you watch there it sends your kikitomo account:

  • which show and episode or video you’re watching, and its Japanese subtitles, to analyse them and add them to your library;
  • which words appeared while you watched and which you looked up (as counts), to suggest words you probably know;
  • the status you give a word, and lines you choose to save for review, each with a still frame of the video and a short audio clip of that line;
  • when something goes wrong, a problem report: the site, the kind of problem, its error message and the extension’s version. Reports aren’t tied to your account.

It doesn’t read or send anything from other websites, and nothing about your browsing beyond the episode you’re on. Your sign-in token and Jimaku API key are kept in the extension’s storage in your browser.

Who else sees it

  • Jimaku (jimaku.cc), if you add a Jimaku API key: the extension searches it for subtitles with the show’s name, using your key.
  • GitHub: the extension and the site look up subtitles in the Kitsunekko mirror, a public repository on GitHub. GitHub sees those requests, as it would any website visit.
  • Our email provider delivers the emails we send you (confirming your address, password resets).
  • Our backup storage provider keeps copies of the database, so it isn’t lost if a server fails.

That’s all. We don’t sell your data, share it with advertisers, show ads, or use analytics or tracking scripts. The only cookies are the one that keeps you signed in and a few that remember where you are in your reviews.

Keeping and deleting it

Your data is kept while you have an account. On the Account page (in the account menu) you can download all of it at any time: your words, reviews, library with its subtitles, and saved frames and audio. You can also delete your account there. Everything in it is deleted straight away, and it leaves our backups within five weeks as they’re replaced. If you can’t sign in, email [email protected] from the address you signed up with and we’ll delete it for you.

Children

kikitomo isn’t meant for children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their data.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version goes on this page with a new date.
